Why Seamless Aluminum Is the Right Material for Syracuse

Aluminum will not rust — which matters when gutters are wet from October through April. Galvanized steel (still common on older Syracuse homes in Eastwood, Westvale, Solvay) eventually rusts at seams and streaks the fascia. Aluminum does not have that failure mode.

Seamless also handles freeze-thaw better than vinyl, which gets brittle below 20°F and cracks at hangers and corners after 5–7 winters.

The "seamless" part means each gutter run is fabricated as a single continuous piece on site. Sectional gutters have a seam every 10 feet — and every seam is a potential leak point. Seamless runs only have joints at corners and downspout outlets.

The exception: historic homes in neighborhoods like Sedgwick, University Hill, and Strathmore — where copper or half-round profiles are appropriate to the architecture.

    Materials

    Materials We Install

    Standard

    .032 Aluminum, K-Style

Heavier-gauge baked-enamel aluminum (.032" instead of the thinner .025" many installers use). Resists deformation under snow load. 25+ stock colors with 20+ year finish warranties.

    Traditional

    .032 Aluminum, Half-Round

Suited to homes built before 1940. Same water capacity as K-style at the same diameter, with easier debris flow.

    Premium

    Copper, K-Style or Half-Round

For historic homes or where a 50+ year service life is wanted. Develops green patina over 2–4 years. Soldered seams, copper hangers.

    What we don't recommend

    • Vinyl — gets brittle below 20°F and cracks at hangers after 5–7 winters
    • Galvanized steel — eventually rusts at seams and streaks the fascia
    • Light-gauge .025" aluminum — deforms under Syracuse snow load

We'll install them on request, but we'll explain why we think they're wrong first.

    Sizing

5-Inch vs. 6-Inch: Which Do You Need?

5-inch K-style is the default for most Central New York homes. Mixing sizes is fine: 6-inch on the high-volume runs, 5-inch elsewhere.

    Step up to 6-inch when:

    • Roof plane over 800 sq ft draining to one run
    • Steep pitches above 7/12
    • Valleys concentrating water onto a single section
    • Significant tree exposure
    • Recurring ice dam history

    What "On-Site Fabricated" Actually Means

Our truck arrives with a portable extrusion machine, coil stock in your color, and synthetic underlayment for fascia protection. The machine forms K-style or half-round from flat coil and cuts each run to length.

    • Each run is one continuous piece
    • All gutters from the same coil (no batch color variation)
    • No off-site warehousing markup
    • Last-minute size adjustments possible

    Our Snow-Load Engineered Specs

Standard install specs are written for milder climates. Ours are not.

    • Hidden hangers at 24" on-center — Industry standard is 32" — ours hold against snow load
    • Screwed into rafter tails — Through the fascia into structure wherever possible
    • 3×4" oversized downspouts — 40% more capacity than standard 2×3"
    • Mechanical-fastened end caps — Polyurethane sealed — not snap-fit
    • 1/4" per 10ft pitch, string-lined — On every single run
    • Drip edge integration — Coordinated with the roof system
